Studio Richter Mahr — where world-class sound meets intimate space.
Nestled within the home of composer Max Richter and artist Yulia Mahr, this commercial music studio was a true exercise in precision, balance, and sensitivity. The key challenge: achieving studio-grade acoustic isolation just a single wall away from their living space.
To meet this unique brief, we designed a high-performance isolation shell beginning with a mass concrete floating floor. This base supports a robust steel frame structure, which in turn carries the inner isolation walls and ceiling. The outer isolation shell was constructed using dense 7kN solid concrete blocks, providing an additional barrier of mass and separation between the creative and domestic worlds.
Inside the studio, acoustic treatments are seamlessly integrated into the architecture—combining low and high-frequency absorbers with warm, elegant finishes. Stretched fabric panels and bespoke solid oak timber slats provide both sonic control and a refined aesthetic, creating an environment that is as inspiring to work in as it is acoustically impeccable.
